Divine Chocolate is a Fairtrade chocolate company with a mission for  improving the livelihood of cocoa producers in West Africa.  The cocoa for Divine chocolate is grown in the southern regions of Ghana by a farmers’ co-operative called Kuapa Kokoo and is a very labor intensive job.  The tiny blossoms on cocoa plants become pods.  Each pod contains about 40 seeds, which become cocoa beans.  The pods are cut from the trees and then split open.  Next, the beans go through a process of fermentation and drying.  The beans are then shipped by a Dutch importer to Europe, where  beans are transformed into melting chocolate.

This eye- catching necklace is etched and dyed on sustainably harvested tagua nut, and was created in Ecuador by the Artisan group Camari, which means “gift”.  This co-op began in 1981,  due to problems that farmers and artisans of Ecuador were facing in selling their products. Because of a lack of markets, many artisans and farmers were forced to sell to intermediaries at a low price and could not make a living. Camari offers artisans and farmers direct marketing outlets and fair payment. Today, through the sales of their products, they are providing alternative employment to more than 6,500 farmer and artisan families.

Greetings, Bookstore fans! Quite often you ask us what we’re reading, and we’re more than happy to fill you in. We don’t always get a chance to hear from you, though, and we think it’s high time we heard about your latest intellectual meanderings through your favorite authors.
